Because the Internet - 2013

  • I’m pretty sure this was the first rap album I deeply loved. It’s wildly iconic to me, literally just thinking about it places me back at my first year halls, Benyon, I can picture it so clearly lol, wtf
  • Look at this frickin tracklist dude, absolutely burned into my brain, listened to this so many times!!

I bought the vinyl to read the screenplay that he wrote

  • Real nerd shit

Camp - 2011

  • I went back and listened to Camp a bunch, and whilst corny as shittttt, I really liked it. Vividly reminds me of my first ever skiing holiday with my girlfriend and her family
  • Absolutely before Gambino became cool. Real nerd shit

Kauai - 2014

  • I really loved this actually. Sober rules
  • Omg, Retro!!!! The nostalgia!!! Are you kidding me!!!
  • Shit, this is so iconic. Soooo evocative of Reading

STN MTN - 2014

  • Easy to forget about because it’s only on Soundcloud/Youtube, but damn, super iconic too, very very evocative, listened to it so much
  • Just very fun and dumb, low stakes
  • Also has β€œYou Don’t Have To Call” on it which is gorgeous, really great singing
    • SHIT, this is so so so good dude. REALLY reminds me of walking to the frozen yoghurt place, my god, lol
    • Soundcloud link

”Awaken, My Love!” - 2016

  • The first time I heard the lead single, I was in the library with two friends, I put my headphones on and was fucking BLOWN AWAY
  • (Me and Your Mama). Insanely different sound from Because the Internet, came out of absolutely nowhere, absolutely incredible. Goosebumps
  • And then the whole album came out and omg, what a fucking mixed bag, holy shit. Have Some Love, Boogieman, Zombies, California, (especially California) are so fucking corny
  • But some incredible highlights too, ok mainly Redbone and Me and Your Mama, but still, what fucking highlights
  • Overall I was kinda disappointed but impressed by the mega-highlights and the major change of pace. I also tried listening to Maggot Brain to understand the references

This is America - 2018

  • At this point I definitely felt distanced from Gambino, it felt clear that he’s like… not a guy, he’s a character, or something, idk.
  • Really cool to see this get so huge though. Music video is insane, this really was such a cultural moment

3.15.20 - 2020

  • Similar feeling - it came out, it seemed like he didn’t really care about it that much, it had some good songs (the 21 Savage one and the final song, which is INSANE), but I struggled to care that much
    • The final song, which, since he released the album and actually named the songs is now called Final Church, is just obscenely good, it’s actually fucking insane. I love his crazy preacher character, so so so charismatic and powerful
    • I literally can’t listen to this song without dancing, and the urge to dance rarely comes to me lol. The build up at the end is just absolutely insane
