1. Discovering rap!

  • One of my favourite things about my first year at uni was getting really into rap
  • I forget how it happened. It honestly could have been “watched Community → watched the Childish Gambino ‘Sweatpants’ music video” lol. Or maybe watching Anthony Fantano?
  • Childish Gambino
  • Childish Gaminbo’s “Because the Internet” was the first rap album I really loved
  • Kauai too!!! vividly remember walking across the campus from Benyon listening to this. Also listening to it whilst walking to work at the frozen yoghurt place
  • Drake
    • I also really liked Drake’s “If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late”
    • And then “Nothing Was the Same” and to a lesser extent “Take Care”
    • His beef with Meek Mill was actually really great
  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Then I got into Kendrick
    • Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d city
    • I remember trying out To Pimp A Butterfly in my first year bedroom when Kanye tweeted about how good it was, and I bounced right off it, too jazzy and weird
      • Of course it eventually clicked hard
  • Kanye West
    • Remembering walking from my 1st year halls listening to this!
  • J Cole
    • Black Friday freestyles - Kendrick and J Cole swapping beats, so good

Other

  • Tame Impala – Currents
  • Lorde – Pure Heroine
